Conservation of Widows’ Houses
The Widows’ Houses is an exquisite terrace of four stone houses constructed in 1827 to accommodate the widows of employees of the adjacent estate. Works include the removal of two pairs of 20th century chimneys, and reconstruction of the larger, more ornate chimneys that were part of the original construction. Fortunately a high quality photograph of the building was available (taken 1880 – 1900), which enabled the accurate reconstruction of the ornate chimneys from original source material. Through careful analysis of the photography and adjacent buildings of the same era, it was also possible to faithfully replicate the intricate fascia details which had been lost through time.
